Write-back Cache Timeout Prediction
نویسنده
چکیده
File systems typically hold newly written data in a cache for a short period of time before writing to disk. Because many files are short-lived, by caching file blocks for longer than their lifetime disk operations are avoided. We evaluate the performance of using an on-line learning algorithm to predict the best timeout to use before committing a data-block to disk. We create a loss function based on costs associated with caching and disk operations. Using a cost-based loss function, it is easy to tune the learning algorithm to perform for different criteria, for example to use less cache space, by adjusting the prices of resources.

Adaptive Disk Spin-Down Algorithms in Practice
Significant research has been done to minimize disk energy consumption with excellent timeout based disk spindown algorithms [1, 3, 4, 5]. However, in practice, performance is limited with such algorithms due to spin-up latency, file-system logging, and page-cache write-back policies. Spin-up latency significantly decreases user interactivity while file-system logging and dirty-page writeback p...
متن کاملReducing Energy Consumption using a Non-Volatile storage cache
We can outperform the most powerful disk spin-down algorithm available by using a small non-volatile storage write-only cache to temporarily store hard disk write requests while a disk is spun-down. In our experiments, we use a USB thumb drive device as our non-volatile storage cache. By redirecting writes to a flash memory while a disk is spun-down we avoid costly hard disk cycle start-stop op...
متن کاملWrite-Back Caches in WCET Analysis
Write-back caches are a popular choice in embedded microprocessors as they promise higher performance than write-through caches. So far, however, their use in hard real-time systems has been prohibited by the lack of adequate worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis support. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to statically analyze the behavior of write-back caches. Prior work took an “...
متن کاملWrite policies for host-side flash caches
Host-side flash-based caching offers a promising new direction for optimizing access to networked storage. Current work has argued for using host-side flash primarily as a read cache and employing a write-through policy which provides the strictest consistency and durability guarantees. However, write-through requires synchronous updates over the network for every write. For write-mostly or wri...
متن کاملImpact of Cache Coherence Protocols on the Power Consumption of STT-RAM-Based LLC
To gain higher density and lower leakage, STT-RAM has been considered an alternative to SRAM for implementing last-level caches (LLCs). However, STT-RAM requires high write energy to program. Consequently, frequent write-backs from the upper-level caches or cache fills from the main memory will result in high LLC power. Both the broadcast and write-back traffic are affected by the cache coheren...
